On a Sunday afternoon in October, twelve children from Voorbedag Primêr stood up in front of an audience and spelled.

For every one of them it was the first time. The school had never taken part in a Spelling Bee, so this one was their own. The Klein Karoo Leessentrum, Elzie Stapelberg from the Tina Cowley Leessentrum in Oudtshoorn, and Swartberg Country Manor put it together between them.

Three learners from each of grades 4 to 7 took part. Hirania Everts won the day. AJ-Lee Avontuur, Mavirine Julies and Shabadia Swartbooi won their grades.

The school's grounds border Swartberg Country Manor, where the Leessentrum began ten years ago, and Voorbedag's children have used it every one of those years. Elzie comes twice a week. The principal, Ms L van Hanse, says she cannot overstate the difference it makes.

Next year there will be another.
