Reading opens a bigger world
For several years the Klein Karoo Word4Word Reading Centre has offered a safe space where children and adults in the Matjiesrivier Valley can build a love of reading and learning.
The centre works not only with learners but with parents and teachers too, so that reading takes root at home as well as in the classroom. Volunteers and sponsors, among them Specsavers, have helped carry the project, and certificate ceremonies mark every learner who reaches a milestone.
The thread running through the work is a simple one. The more you read, the bigger your world becomes. For the children who have come through the programme, the clearest gain is confidence: no longer being afraid to read.
