One afternoon for the Karoo's readers
In September the Oudtshoorn Courant reported on the afternoon of 8 November, when Mauritz Lotz and Harry Sideropoulos join forces at the Drostdy Theatre in Stellenbosch for the Klein Karoo Leessentrum in Matjiesrivier.
Harry prepares a three-course lunch on stage, where possible with food from the Klein Karoo itself, and Mauritz brings Plektrum, his personal production about where he comes from. Both are giving their time and talent.
The article also tells the centre's own story. It began at Swartberg Country Manor in 2015 to help children who struggle to read. According to Leoni Fourie, one of its founders, it has since grown into a full programme: help with reading and schoolwork, sport to build confidence and teamwork, the Tina Cowley Leessentrum with computers for the learners, and food and clothing for families who need it.
So the afternoon is more than two artists on one stage. It is a contribution to the future of children in the Klein Karoo.

“The centre's aim is to find where a child needs support, and then close those gaps with consistent, practical help.” Oudtshoorn Courant
